During the weekend of 6 and 7 November, the Barbican offers a chance for everyone to try out instruments, make instruments, to join a choir or an ensemble or to play along to a silent film.

6 November
The weekend begins with “Be Musical”

Families are encouraged to bring their own instruments along, to choose from a selection available or to make a brand new one on the day.
Five free music workshops for beginners take place throughout the day all around the Centre, including a wide range of drop-in activities.
Together with professional musicians children can try out instruments and explore classical music, rock, folk, jazz and percussion instruments.
In three separate Make Zones visitors can discover how sound is made and build their own instruments.
Architects Jonathan Pugh and Douglas Murphy reveal their Percussion Buffet; Carina Levitan leads in string instrument making and Neil Luck in wind instrument making.
Tickets £2 each

Throughout the day people can drop in at two music installations for free

Play Me - encourages children to create music in different ways – from pressing buttons to conducting a trio, and to interact with musicians and technology
Cast Your Note – allows children to be part of developing a live music piece by casting a note.

As part of the London Children’s Film Festival children can join in on a Sing-a-long to Beauty and the Beast, and at the end of the day they can bring along their instruments, or the instruments that they have just made, to Play-a-Long to a Laurel and Hardy classic.

On Sunday there will be a wide range of free workshops takes place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The day is designed for both young people and adults who play an instrument, used to play an instrument or have always wanted to play an instrument.
There will be a possibility for players of any age to play together in ensembles such as the Scratch Ensemble led by musicians of the Urban Folk Quartet (no music reading required), a rock band led by the Lazy Habits drummer Ross McDouall, or a Percussion Beats workshop exploring different percussion instruments with Guildhall Percussion Ensemble in residence, Sankorfa.
There is also a chance to try out the piano in small groups of six, and to join a choir for the day, coached by teachers from Sense of Sound.
All activities are free but as places are limited, pre-booking is essential.

Samson and Delilah

I watched yesterday Samson and Delilah, an amazing film about the aborigines in Australia and their current situation in the country. I am embedding the trailer, but I recommend to arrive fresh at the cinema (I personally don't like to watch trailers and read synopsis before). So here is my six stars recommendation.

The film is not yet released in the UK, I watched it at 'guests' view promoted by Survival, an international organisation that aims to help the nearly extinct tribes around the world. Here is the link of their website.

And an extract from Survival's brochure:

SURVIVAL NOT EXTINCTION
Time is running out. Big businesses and governments driven by racism and greed are rapidly pushing tribal peoples to extinction. They are stealing their lands, violating their human rights, and obliterating their cultures.

Survival forces tribal issues into the political and cultural mainstream. We are helping tribal peoples defend their lives, protect their lands and determine their own futures. Over the past 40 years we have repeatedly triumphed over victimization and oppression through education, advocacy and public pressure.

HUMANS NOT ALIENS
The governments and commercial forces that persecute tribes regard them as inferior, and will stop at nothing to get what they want, including murder, torture and exile. But this is just an extension of a much deeper racial prejudice that sees tribal people as 'primitive', 'uncivilised', an impediment to 'progress' and many rungs below us on the evolutionary ladder.

There is a perception that tribes are stuck in the past or that the thrust of our work is to preserve them in a romantic bubble. Not true. just like you and I, tribal people live in the modern world and deal with it every day. At the root of Survival's work is teaching people around the world that tribal cultures - where they allowed to flourish - are dynamic, ever-evolving, sustainable, and relevant.

I came from south of Brasil and I witnessed this every day. I am hardly touched by it and I definitely definitely DON'T understand how people could be so cruel to get on this situation... Trained as a musician and composer, French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways. His installation for The Curve will take the form of a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other instruments and objects. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape.

We had problems with the sound, because in the show the amplifier was distorted, so to edit the video without taking the laughs out was another issue.. I decided to leave the laughs and to sacrifice the sound quality..

We who have violated the laws, commands and duties of the avant-garde; i.e. to bore, tranquilize and obfuscate through a fluke process dictated by practical convenience stand guilty as charged. We openly renounce and reject the entrenched academic snobbery which erected a monument to laziness known as structuralism and proceeded to lock out those filmmakers who possesed the vision to see through this charade.

We refuse to take their easy approach to cinematic creativity; an approach which ruined the underground of the sixties when the scourge of the film school took over. Legitimising every mindless manifestation of sloppy movie making undertaken by a generation of misled film students, the dreary media arts centres and geriatic cinema critics have totally ignored the exhilarating accomplishments of those in our rank - such underground invisibles as Zedd, Kern, Turner, Klemann, DeLanda, Eros and Mare, and DirectArt Ltd, a new generation of filmmakers daring to rip out of the stifling straight jackets of film theory in a direct attack on every value system known to man.

We propose that all film schools be blown up and all boring films never be made again. We propose that a sense of humour is an essential element discarded by the doddering academics and further, that any film which doesn’t shock isn’t worth looking at. All values must be challenged. Nothing is sacred. Everything must be questioned and reassessed in order to free our minds from the faith of tradition.Intellectual growth demands that risks be taken and changes occur in political, sexual and aesthetic alignments no matter who disapproves. We propose to go beyond all limits set or prescribed by taste, morality or any other traditional value system shackling the minds of men. We pass beyond and go over boundaries of millimeters, screens and projectors to a state of expanded cinema.

We violate the command and law that we bore audiences to death in rituals of circumlocution and propose to break all the taboos of our age by sinning as much as possible. There will be blood, shame, pain and ecstasy, the likes of which no one has yet imagined. None shall emerge unscathed. Since there is no afterlife, the only hell is the hell of praying, obeying laws, and debasing yourself before authority figures, the only heaven is the heaven of sin, being rebellious, having fun, fucking, learning new things and breaking as many rules as you can. This act of courage is known as transgression. Bob Cobbing

One of the best known sound poets in the world is Bob Cobbing, a dynamic gentleman with a sonorous voice and lovely accent, who was active as a poet, performer, and composer of text-sound compositions. Cobbing also was a producer and collector of concrete or visual poetry, and his bookstore, Better Books of London was a leading distribution point for avant-garde poets during the 1960s and 70s. In this program Cobbing talks about his early work as a teacher and later as a publisher of visual poetry, as well as his opinions about the field of sound poetry. You will hear a selection of his sound poems and an engaging interview recorded in Cobbing’s home as he talked with Charles Amirkhanian. Bob Cobbing died in 2002 at the age of 82.

"Oskar Schlemmer did not confine his activities at the Bauhaus to painting and teaching sculpture. He also wanted to put his ideas about ballet into practice, and in 1922 he did so in public for the first time. He planned to free the stage from the trappings of tradition in order to give expression to the `pure idea.' The central theme of his work was the relation between humankind and space, and the mediator between these two was to be the dancer, stripped of his individual identity by the use of costumes and masks. This documentary film, made with the artistic advice of Oskar Schlemmer's widow, presents an historically faithful, precise reconstruction of some of his dances. More than any other film, it gives a sense of what Bauhaus teaching was really like, and is truly important to an understanding of the origins of contemporary dance."

The ICA is proud to present the acclaimed international group exhibition For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn't there, which features works by over twenty modern and contemporary artists, including still lifes by Giorgio Morandi, a celebrated film by Fischli & Weiss, and a sculptural installation by Dave Hullfish Bailey. The exhibition celebrates the speculative nature of knowledge, rejecting the common assumption that art is a code that needs cracking, and presenting works that employ nonknowledge, unlearning and productive confusion as ways to understand the world.

The exhibition takes its title from a remark attributed to Charles Darwin, who is supposed to have compared mathematical enquiry to the explorations of a blind man. However, the project also nods to The Blind Man, the journal which was co-founded by Marcel Duchamp, and a re-issue of which (by artist Sarah Crowner) is presented in the ICA's concourse. Other works here include a game by David William, which encourages visitors to engage with the idea of the fourth dimension, and a large piñata by Mariana Castillo Deball in the shape of a Klein bottle - a topological form whose outside is indistinguishable from its inside.

Cheese Kit Diptych is an installation by artist Walter Willems consisting of two drum kits. In one, full rounds of real (mainly Dutch) cheese sit atop drum stands; in the other, plastic cheese replicas usually found in store display windows are employed. In this absurd setting Willems reinforces the international stereotype of the Dutch by using a classic Dutch export product as its main ingredient.

Cheese Kit Diptych was created specifically to be played by world-renowned Dutch improvisational jazz drummer Han Bennink. Bennink, ambassador of the Dutch free jazz scene, is known for his ability to drum on any surface, teeming with humor, virtuosity, and creativity through his animated style. Willems considered his installation incomplete until Bennink played both of the drum kits.

"In 1973 I made “Rainforest IV” where the objects that the sounds are sent through are very large so that they have their own presence in space. I mean, they actually sound locally in the space where they are hanging as well as being supplemented by a loudspeaker system. The idea is that if you send sound through materials, the resonant nodes of the materials are released and those can be picked up by contact microphones or phono cartridges and those have a different kind of sound than the object does when you listen to it very close where it’s hanging. It becomes like a reflection and it makes, I thought, quite a harmonious and beautiful atmosphere, because wherever you move in the room, you have reminiscences of something you have heard at some other point in the space. It’s (can be) a large group piece actually, any number of people can participate in it. It’s important that each person makes their own sculpture, decides how to program it, and performs it themselves. Very little instruction is necessary for the piece. I’ve found it to be almost self-teaching because you discover how to program the devices by seeing what they like to accept. Its been a very rewarding type of activity for me. It’s been done by as large a group as 14 people. So that was how our Rainforest was done.”

Uakti is a mythical musician described by the Tukano natives of the Alto Rio Negro region of the Amazon. According to the legend, the creature had holes in his body that they would produce sound when he ran or the wind blew through him.
